What determines a game speed? Is it the computer RAM or the Video Card's RAM?

Ex/ I had 1gb ram and a old 256mb intel video card - NFS most wanted lagged a lot with those specs, then later I upgraded my Video card to a Nvidia 512mb, NFS Most wanted worked perfect without a single lag.

even the CPU needs to be of higher end to match with the high end Graphic card and the RAM. HDD RPM also is a good parameter to consider. as games running in a 5400 RPM HDD will load slow than a 10000RPM HDD.
